SHINGLE-STYLE

westport, ct

This project is currently in progress.

Architect: Michael Smith Architecture

As you enter the property, a rose hedge lines your approach to this shingle-style home. A new Magnolia provides a focal point, while a stone wall defines the entry to the parking court and creates a natural separation between the expansive front lawn and the middle property. Timeless plantings of boxwood globes, manicured hedge and textured groundcover balance the home’s scale and ground it in the landscape. A cherry tree allée underplanted with native pollinator favorites and enhanced privacy screening round out the front improvements.

The homeowners office opens onto a new terrace set beneath an existing specimen shade tree, capturing a framed view to the water through strategically placed ornamental trees. Stone-slab steps descend the slope, softening into individual lawn treads as they meet the meadow below. An espalier tree tunnel leads from the slope garden to the main entertaining space, where distinct yet connected garden rooms unfold, including a walled vegetable garden, pool, fountain, dedicated peony garden and a fire pit nestled within lush plantings. Through the meadow, a mown path leads to a seating area on the water’s edge, completing an extensive and thoughtfully composed list of amenities.
